MAGNA, Utah (AP) -- The mayor of Salt Lake County says he wants to know more about years of secrecy surrounding a waste pit that belongs to Kennecott Utah Copper.
Mayor Peter Corroon says it was a mistake to keep the public in the dark about problems at the site.
The Salt Lake Tribune this week reported that Kennecott was told in 1988 that a strong earthquake could turn the old tailings pond into a disaster for neighboring homes in Magna. But the information apparently was never made public.
The company says it has spent more than $500 million to stabilize the pond and build a new one. Kennecott representatives plan to attend a public meeting Thursday night in Magna.
