Budget typo gives town residents a brief scare

CLARKSTON, Utah (AP) -- A misplaced decimal point caused some heartburn for Clarkston residents who recently got their tax notices.

Many in this Cache Valley town of 720 were shocked to see a proposed 300 percent property tax increase.

Councilwoman Jill Ashcroft says she's responsible for the mistake, which happened while she was putting the budget together. She joined the town council in January and says she was unfamiliar with all that goes into creating a budget.

The town's not looking for a 300 percent tax increase. But it is seeking a 50 percent increase to cover the rising cost of winter snow removal.
