SALT LAKE CITY — The lights are on, the fans are fired up, and the energy is electric at Rice-Eccles Stadium as the Utah Utes face off against the Cincinnati Bearcats for the first time ever — and it’s all happening under the national spotlight of ESPN’s College GameDay. This isn’t just any game. It’s a Top 25 Big 12 clash that’s drawing national attention and local pride. The Utes are hosting what fans are calling a “Dark Mode Game,” where black attire is more than a fashion statement — it’s a symbolic send-off for the Bearcats. “If energy determined how football teams won,” one fan told KSL, “it’d be touchdowns around the clock for Utah.” Tailgating festivities kicked off at 7 a.m., and the scene outside the stadium has been buzzing ever since. Music, food, and fan frenzy filled the air as thousands of Utes supporters gathered in their red, black, and white gear, ready to cheer their team to victory. In the West Lot, longtime fan Richard Hirschi and his crew were confident in Utah’s chances. “I think we’ll kill them,” Hirschi said with a grin. “We’ve been tailgating for 50 years — 30 years up above in the big tailgate lot.” From Bearcat-themed burgers sizzling on the grill to decked-out vans and season ticket holders showing off their game-day pride, the pre-game atmosphere was nothing short of electric. “We’re having Bearcat burgers,” Hirschi joked. “With mustard, ketchup, tomato, lettuce — and blue cheese.” And while the game itself is the main event, one lucky University of Utah student stole the spotlight earlier in the day. Jonah Knubel, 21, nailed a 33-yard field goal during ESPN’s College GameDay festivities — and walked away with a whopping $125,000 prize. As the Utes take the field tonight, fans are hoping this energy translates into a win — and maybe even a streak to carry them through the rest of the season. Stay tuned to KSL for live updates and post-game coverage.
