FRANCHISEDOM ā The release of āAlien: Covenantā will mark the sixth film in the celebrated franchise.
Iām sure some of you are wagging a finger at me all judgmental like saying, āOh no. No. This is No. 8.ā Well, in a way it is, but in a better way, itās No. 6. I am not counting āAlien vs. Predatorā and āAlien vs. Predator: Requiemā because not only are they really bad movies, but theyāre crossover films. Iām just focusing on what is considered the Alien canon and with that, āCovenantā is No. 6.
There are a lot of franchises out there with at least six films in their catalog, but not all are good and that should come as no surprise. There are some, however, that are great and thatās what weāre focusing on here.
Here is a list of the best part sixās in movie franchises:
āStar Trek VI: The Undiscovered Countryā
Related Stories:
In 1991, the original crew of the U.S.S Enterprise got together one last time for a feature film with āStar Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.ā It was this group's last hurrah together, and they wanted to make something special and they did.
While āStar Trek II: The Wrath of Khanā still stands as the best of the series, āUndiscovered Countryā is a great entry. The film boasts some solid action, fun performances and an engaging story as the crew tries to break Kirk and McCoy out of a Klingon prison.
āHarry Potter and the Half-Blood Princeā
Itās not that I donāt like the Harry Potter films, but I never got super into them. For the most part, I figured there was no need to rush out to a theater to see the latest entry, so I would wait until it popped up on Redbox and I had nothing else going on.
This is exactly how I saw āHarry Potter and the Half-Blood Princeā and it became apparent very quickly that this is one that I would have paid to see in the theater.
The sixth installment in the multibillion-dollar franchise caught my attention as a more mature Harry took on more serious threats with his friends and started to uncover more of the story that weād been waiting for. Personally, Iāve never been dying to rewatch the series, but Iād be happy to rewatch āThe Half-Blood Prince.ā
āRocky Balboaā
Rocky Balboa has become a staple of Americana over the years and in 2006, Sylvester Stallone thought heād give the Italian Stallion a comeback.
Like most everyone else, I was really skeptical about the film, considering the train wreck āRocky Vā was. Sure, āRocky IVā was campy and ridiculous, but at least it was fun. āRocky Vā was just terrible. So when the sixth installment āRocky Balboaā hit theaters, I was less than enthusiastic, but I was wrong.
The story wasnāt breaking any new ground and some of it was a bit too silly, but overall, the film hearkened back to the days of the original movie and actually managed to hit the mark and turn into a decent film.
With all that said, it should be noted that the seventh film in the franchise, āCreed,ā is a superior film, but weāre talking about part sixās here.
āThe Avengersā
The Marvel Cinematic Universe just released its 17th film with āGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,ā and this film studio knows how to make money.
As many of my readers know and hate me for it, I am not the biggest Marvel fan. I think some of the films are great, but I think others are a pile of steaming garbage. While I thought the sixth entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was highly overrated, I cannot argue that āThe Avengersā was a fun time at the movies and pleased audiences across the globe.
āThe Avengersā managed to do what many had tried to do but ultimately failed at, and that's make an ensemble superhero movie that actually works.
When it comes to part sixās, āThe Avengersā is by far the most successful and likely most universally loved. Well, maybe that is until I get to the next film on the list.
āStar Wars: Episode VI ā Return of the Jediā
Iām kind of cheating here, but I donāt care. āStar Wars: Episode VI ā Return of the Jediā was the third Star Wars movie released, but itās Episode VI for crying out loud, so I had to get it on here.
āReturn of the Jediā wasnāt the cinematic masterpiece that āEmpire Strikes Backā was, but it was a satisfying finale to what may be the most iconic trilogy of all time. The movie did have Ewoks and it killed off Boba Fett, but it also gave us speeder bikes and the epic battle between Luke and Vader.
āReturn of the Jediā is a fun Star Wars movie and even though it wasnāt the sixth film made, it has earned its spot on this list.
