VERNAL -- A teacher at Vernal Junior High School is behind bars, accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Norman Bernard, 57, was booked into the Uintah County Jail Thursday for investigation of sexual abuse. He was arrested for five counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child and four counts of sexual abuse of a minor.

Bernard teaches history and drama and was given an excellence in teaching award from the Uintah School Foundation in 2008.

Since the allegations, Bernard has been placed on administrative leave. He is currently being held on $132,400 bail.
