SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau show Utah is last among U.S. states for the percentage of its population that is eligible to vote.

The estimates released Thursday say 68.8 percent of Utahns are 18 or over -- old enough to vote. That's more than 1.9 million residents of the state's estimated population of nearly 2.8 million.

Texas comes in just ahead, with an estimated 72.2 percent of its population eligible to vote.

The national average is 75.7 percent.

Utah's rank is no surprise, the Deseret News reported on its website Thursday, since it has the highest percentage of children of any state and the highest birthrate.
