CENTERVILLE -- A 12-year-old boy was hit by a car in Centerville Tuesday evening when he was riding his bike in a crosswalk at 400 West and Chase Lane.

Police aren't sure why the driver didn't see the boy.

"I saw the person over here stop at the stop sign and then come very slowly across the street," witness Cyndie Chidester said. "I didn't see any bicycle, driver or anything until something went ‘clunk,' and I just thought it was a piece of her car or something. So, I don't know which direction the boy came from or anything. I just saw him laying on the ground."

The boy was airlifted to a hospital with what officers describe as a serious head injury.

Police say the 37-year-old woman whose car hit the boy is extremely distraught. She and the boy live in the same neighborhood.
