PROVO -- BYU hosts Florida State on Saturday. The Seminoles are not ranked, while the Cougars are No. 7. But players know an early high ranking isn't always a good thing.

Despite their best attempts to downplay their No. 7 ranking, the players know it's their school's highest since 1996.

"It's a great honor, but it's the second week of the season," said BYU defensive lineman Jan Jorgensen. "Second week of the season means pretty much nothing."

"A ranking's a ranking," defensive back Andrew Rich said. "It's been two games, you know. I think last year we learned our lesson."

The Cougars started last season ranked 16th. After week three--a 59-0 blowout over UCLA--the Cougars jumped to No. 11. Then 3 weeks later, BYU was undefeated at 6-0 and bumped to No. 8. But the next week, TCU humbled the Cougars, and BYU dropped to No. 17.

"To be honest, I don't think any guys have really paid attention to it. You know, you hear talk and chatter outside the locker room, but there's really not much attention paid to that," Rich said.

Saturday's game against the Seminoles begins at 5 p.m. in Provo.
