POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) -- David Schroeder scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Akbar Abdul-Ahad added 16 points and six assists to lead Idaho State past Utah Valley State 76-62 Tuesday night.
Ryan Toolson led Utah Valley State with 19 points.
Utah Valley State (6-5) grabbed an early 11-3 lead, paced by three quick 3-pointers from David Heck and a tenacious man-to-man defense that initially stifled Idaho State (5-6).
But then ISU began to heat up, answering with a 12-3 run of its own, and when Schroeder hit a 3-pointer at the 9:26 mark, Idaho State had its first lead of the game at 15-14.
The two teams battled back and forth the rest of the half, with neither leading by more than five points, and Utah Valley State led 33-32 at halftime.
The game remained close early in the second half although Utah Valley State got into foul trouble, picking up seven fouls in the first 5:30 of the period.
A free throw by Schroeder at the 14:24 mark tied the score at 43 and sparked an 11-3 run as Idaho State opened up a 53-46 lead.
Utah Valley State cut that lead to one, at 55-54, on a pair of free throws by Richard Troyer with 8:06 left, but that was as close as the Wolverines would get. A 3-pointer by Schroeder with 5:22 left gave the Bengals a 67-56 lead, and Idaho State cruised to victory.
