Press ReleaseSALT LAKE CITY -- The new issue of Sporting News Magazine, which hits newsstands later this week, celebrates the 50 best intrastate rivalries in sports. SN picked one per state.
Among them: BYU-Utah football.
Sporting News enlisted the help of former Utes coach Urban Meyer, now the head coach at Florida, to explain what makes this rivalry so special. Excerpts:
"In Salt Lake City and the state of Utah, that rivalry divided married couples, siblings and other family members unlike any that I have ever seen. There was that one weekend at the end of November every year where people were either crimson or blue, and the world hinged on winning that football game. I circled that date on my calendar and the importance was riveted in my mind. I worked hard to keep it in perspective, but rivalry week was one of the most intense experiences of my life. Losing was not an alternative, and I am honored that our team leaders willed us to victory in both years."
The new magazine will be available at all Barnes & Noble, Borders and Hudson Retail outlets.
