LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Nevada's dominant electric utility says it is postponing plans to build a big coal-fired power plant near Ely.
NV Energy Inc. says circumstances have changed since it first proposed the Ely Energy Center project in White Pine County.
Michael Yackira, NV president and chief executive, told reporters in Las Vegas on Monday the company still plans to build a 250-mile transmission line to link the northern and southern parts of the state.
Environmentalists and some politicians, including U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., have been critical of the
1,500-megawatt project, saying cleaner technologies such as wind, solar and geothermal should be the focus to reduce carbon emissions associated with global warming.
