OGDEN — Ogden Police Chief Jake Sube said an Ogden police officer shot and killed a man Thursday while responding to a report of a stabbing.

The incident occurred about 6 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 2300 block of Madison Avenue in Ogden's older core area.

"Officers were dispatched to the apartment complex after receiving reports that a male was stabbing another male at this location," Sube said at a press conference. Numerous officers arrived and were allowed into the apartment, he said, encountering "an active struggle between two adult males."

One of the men appeared to be stabbing another male, and one of the responding officers fired on the apparent aggressor, killing him. Sube identified the person killed as a 64-year-old man who had an active warrant out for his arrest in a felony matter but didn't provide his name pending notification of family. The victim of the stabbing, also not identified, was taken to a hospital and in critical condition but had been stabilized.

As with all police shootings, the Weber County Critical Incident Investigation Team is looking into the matter, and the officer who fired his gun has been placed on administrative leave.

"Our officers are often required to make split-second decisions in dangerous and rapidly evolving situations, and I know and understand what our officers face daily, and I am grateful for their willingness to put themselves in harm's way to protect our community," Sube said.

He said he didn't know how the two men involved in the struggle knew each other. "(I) just know that they were ... inside of that apartment at the time of the incident," Sube said.
