2 Utah officers, along with families, colleagues, honored during National Police Week

WASHINGTON — Officers with the Tremonton-Garland Police Department and the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office are in Washington, D.C. this week for National Police Week, where Sgt. Lee Sorensen and officer Eric Estrada will be honored.

Sorenson and Estrada were shot and killed in the line of duty in the summer of 2025.

The family members and officers arriving in D.C. would not say they are heroes; nonetheless, that's how they are being treated. And it started when they arrived at the airport.

An honor guard of members of the London Metropolitan Police escorted the Utah officers and their families to the baggage claim area, then carried their luggage to buses waiting outside.

"It's a little unexpected," said deputy Timothy Kennedy with the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office as he waited for his luggage. "But it's a little humbling to see."

The honor guard escort was followed by a motorcade, a full police escort with lights and sirens ringing across the American capital.

The Utah officers were greeted at a hotel by another line of officers, made up of police from across the United States, who were there to welcome those dealing with a loss that few people can truly understand.
