MAGNA — A Magna man was charged Wednesday with threatening high school students who had walked out of class to protest Immigrations and Customs Enforcement operations.
Cheyenne Jacob Webb, 34, is charged in 3rd District Court with aggravated assault, a third-degree felony, and disorderly conduct, an infraction.
On Feb. 5 and 6, hundreds of students across the Salt Lake Valley walked out of classes in protest of President Trump's immigration policies and subsequent crackdown. Students across the state have held similar walkouts in recent weeks.
On Feb. 5, Webb got into a verbal confrontation with a large group of students protesting near 3500 South and 8400 West "and made them believe he had a gun and was going to shoot them," according to charging documents. "He continued screaming at them despite adults in the crowd trying to get him to leave the area, and rushed at the crowd in a posturing stance. All of this conduct was captured on video."
Several teens said Webb "reached in his truck, and they thought Webb was reaching for a gun," the charges state. One student told investigators that while he was trying to record Webb's license plate, Webb "can be seen reversing his vehicle at a high rate of speed, causing (the victim) to quickly move out of the way to avoid being struck."
Unified police say there "was an extremely large number of people in the area due to an ongoing protest. Multiple juveniles pointed to (Webb) and claimed, 'That guy right there,' claiming he had threatened to hit them. Several juveniles reported that the male appeared to be reaching into his vehicle for a gun after stating he was going to shoot people at the scene," a police booking affidavit states.
The students had a video of Webb approaching another victim "while yelling and stating, 'I'll show you, gangster,'" according to the affidavit.
