SALT LAKE CITY — What started as a simple cellphone video turned into a Christmas moment four Utah kids will never forget.
When Emma, Gracie, Landon, and Camden Alvernaz watched the video, their reactions said it all.
"I was like, 'That's Dicker!'" said Landon.
Yes, "Dicker the Kicker."
Los Angeles Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker, one of the most accurate kickers in the NFL, delivered something about as meaningful as a game-winning field goal this Christmas for the family.
"It was like, shocking, but I was excited at the same time," said Landon.
The Alvernaz family are longtime Chargers fans.
They moved to Utah from San Diego a few years ago when father Matthew Alvernaz took a job as security director with the Jordan School District.
They brought their love for the Chargers with them. "We stayed loyal to our team. They're still our team," said Alvernaz.
This Christmas, Alvernaz planned a big surprise. He had tickets for the whole family to attend a Chargers game in Los Angeles, but he wanted to make the Christmas surprise even more special for his kids.
So, he reached out to Dicker on social media, never expecting a response.
Then the video arrived.
"It's time for you to be in person cheering for us again. So we will see you at the Texans game, baby! Yeah. Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas," said Dicker in the message.
For Emma, hearing Dicker say her name was almost too much to process.
"I was the first name he said and I was like, 'What? What?'" she said with a big smile.
For the family, the message meant far more than just football tickets.
"It meant more to us than I think he can realize. Like, just just to have that somebody to take time from somewhere else to address our family on Christmas," said Matthew Alvernaz.
The Chargers play this weekend in the first round of the playoffs, airing right here on KSL.
No doubt, they'll have at least one Utah family cheering louder than ever.
