BIG WATER, Kane County — Two women were killed in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 89 near Big Water on Wednesday.
The women, ages 28 and 29, were both from China, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. Their names have not been released.
About 4:40 p.m., the women were in a 2024 BMW SUV on the north side of the highway waiting to cross U.S. 89 to another cross street on the south side, when they pulled into traffic.
"The BMW failed to yield the right of way to the semi and went in front of it. The semi locked its brakes but struck the BMW," according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
A 2020 Kenworth semitruck heading east on U.S. 89 struck the BMW, sending it into the westbound lane, where the BMW was hit a second time by a GMC pickup truck hauling a boat, the UHP stated. The pickup "T-boned" the BMW on the passenger side.
"Both occupants in the BMW were deceased on scene. All five occupants in the GMC were taken by ambulance to the hospital but were later cleared. The driver of the semi was not injured," according to the UHP.
Both directions of U.S. 89 were shut down for several hours as emergency crews responded to the crash and investigated the incident.
