SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Attorney General Derek Brown is speaking out after the arrest of 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, the suspect accused in the shooting that killed Charlie Kirk.
Robinson remains in the Utah County Jail and is expected to make his first court appearance on Tuesday afternoon.
Brown said the Utah County Attorney's Office will be leading the prosecution, but he emphasized that his office will stay closely involved by providing resources and support. He praised the quick work of local law enforcement, the FBI and community members who helped investigators, calling the response "a model of working together."
"We will also do everything we can to make sure that (Robinson) is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," Brown said. "And my hope is that those out there who are watching and listening will use this as an opportunity to help us be unified."
Gov. Spencer Cox has said the death penalty is an option should Robinson be found guilty.
Brown added that while prosecutors will focus on accountability in court, Utahns also have an important role to play — by checking in on one another, helping people work through the trauma of the experience, and continuing open dialogue.
He encouraged Utahns to remember Charlie Kirk's legacy through connection and conversation.
"He modeled how to have productive dialogue. And I think the greatest irony, as well as a way to memorialize him, is to realize that he actually died doing the very thing he modeled," Brown said.
