MEXICO CITY — A mission leader for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mexico City is recovering after he was shot during an attempted robbery early Saturday.

President R. Tyler Wallis, of the Mexico City West Mission, was shot once by an intruder in his home at about 2 a.m. local time, according to a statement from church spokesman Sam Penrod. Wallis is in stable condition at an intermediate care unit in Mexico City and is responding well to treatment, the statement continues,

Sister Elizabeth Thorstenson Wallis, the man's wife, was not injured during the incident, Penrod said.

Further details about the shooting were not immediately available. Mexican authorities are investigating the incident, according to the statement.

"Our prayers are with President and Sister Wallis, their family members and the missionaries during this challenging time," Penrod said. "The church is grateful for the thousands of missionaries and their leaders serving as volunteers throughout the world to extend the love and peace that the Savior Jesus Christ offers to each of us."

The Mexico area presidency is helping to oversee the missionaries as Wallis recovers, the statement says.

The Wallises have been serving in Mexico for just over a month, according to the Church News. The couple have four kids and are from Orlando, Florida. Elizabeth Wallis was born in Provo, and Tyler Wallis was born in Cincinnati, Ohio.
