BRIGHAM CITY — A former Logan police officer was sentenced to two months in jail after pleading guilty to sexually abusing a woman in his squad car.
Carlos Jonathan Cubias, 27, was charged in 2024 with forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony; four counts of unlawful access or use of criminal investigations and technical services division records, a class B misdemeanor; and texting or emailing while driving, a class C misdemeanor.
In a plea agreement in June, Cubias pleaded guilty to the forcible sexual abuse charge that was reduced to a third-degree felony, and the four misdemeanors of unlawful access or use of criminal investigations and technical services division records. The sixth count for texting while driving was dismissed.
Cubias was sentenced to a term of zero to five years for the sexual abuse charge, plus 180 days in jail for each misdemeanor. But those terms were suspended and he was ordered to serve 60 days in jail. He was also sentenced to four years on probation and was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation and comply with recommended treatment.
Cubias "spotted two young women" walking alone at about 2 a.m. on April 30, 2023, and made a U-turn in his squad vehicle and called them over, the charges state. The officer then "insisted the young women get in his vehicle and began driving them to their destination."
While Cubias was driving, he began to ask the women "sexually charged questions," prosecutors wrote.
"Once they reached the destination, (Cubias) demanded one of the young women give him her number. While (she) was putting her number in his phone," Cubias inappropriately touched the woman," the charges state.
The woman "tried to move away," and investigators say the officer then "grabbed" her inappropriately as she walked away.
Police say Cubias "used the information he had gained about (the woman) to conduct four searches for her personal information" in the division records, and he texted her while he was driving his police car.
Logan police confirmed Cubias was an officer for the department from 2019 to May 2023. Cubias was investigated by Brigham City police and resigned shortly after May 2023, while the investigation continued.
"We were made aware of the allegations against him; he was immediately placed on (administrative) leave while the investigation continued," Logan police said in a statement.
Correction: An earlier version said Cubias was sentenced to two months in prison instead of two months in jail.
