SALT LAKE CITY — Pita Pit already has two locations in Utah, but the Mediterranean fast-food restaurant chain is planning to expand on that in a big way over the next five years.

The pita sandwich chain announced Wednesday that it's planning to add at least 10 new locations to Salt Lake City and "its surrounding areas" by the end of the decade. It would build on its existing locations in Ogden and Provo and boost its nationwide footprint.

Pita Pit CEO Peter Riggs explained in a statement that the planned expansion is tied to a "growing demand for healthier dining options" and more fast-food options.

He added that he believes the company has the "unique opportunity" to tap into the quick-service restaurant space. These are typically restaurants that offer simple menus, lower prices and limited in-person dining experiences, according to Flipdish. They allow for more delivery and pick-up options.

"By implementing a drive-thru and prioritizing fresh flavors, we are able to continue the growth of our cult-like following in communities such as Salt Lake City for years to come," Riggs said.

Wednesday's announcement comes a little over a month after the Canadian chain with a U.S. base in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, announced it would focus more on the drive-thru/delivery model, new menus and "technological upgrades" as a part of a "brand refresh."

Brand officials said they would lean heavily on smaller stores, too. It expects to offer more stores that are only 800-1,000 square feet in size. Pita Pit executives noted in April that they planned to focus on "strengthening the brand across the country" starting with expansions in its Salt Lake market, as well as its Denver and Boise markets.

It's unclear yet when or where the new Utah locations will open or how many jobs they may create, as the company said Wednesday it's still searching for single-unit and multi-unit franchisees.

Pita Pit first opened in 1995 and currently boasts 75 stores within 26 states. Most of its states have fewer than five total locations.
