PROVO — Maple Mountain coach Jeff Lake admitted that the 4x400-meter relay team that needed to clinch the Golden Eagles' first boys track and field title since 2012 wasn't necessarily his A-choice lineup.

But the B-squad performed like A-students.

Logan Sircable, Austin Byers, Connor Allen and Tyson Pugmire finished fifth in the final race of the evening in 3 minutes, 24.28 seconds to help Maple Mountain secure the 5A state championship Saturday evening at BYU's Robison Track Complex.

The Golden Eagles got plenty of help, including from Banks Jackson, who won individual titles in the 400 and 200-meter races. But with Jackson exhausted his four-event limit and with a handful of nagging injuries and illnesses afflicting his team, Lake turned to the aforementioned foursome with all the trust of a starting rotation.

And they nailed it.

"I told the other eight kids listed, you might get a call. Next man up; we trust you," Lake explained after the Golden Eagles held off Woods Cross by 6 points and West Jordan by 8.5. "I think they all PR'd in their splits; it was great."

Timpview's girls similarly relied on its depth — as well as a Herculean effort from humble junior star Jane Hedengren — to clinch back-to-back 5A girls championships.

Hedengren won the 800-meter title in 2:07.85, and anchored the winning 4x400-meter relay squad to help the Thunderbirds cruise past second-place Highland by 98 points.

"She really has this incredible amount of humility to her, and she stays hungry," Timpview coach Jaimie Ribera said of Hedengren. "For her, it's about competing with herself and how much better she can be and achieving her potential. But she really does stay hungry and humble, and cares about the team. She shows up for practice, and isn't too good for anything, appreciates the boys that she trains with."

Lily Alder added a 1,600-meter individual title in 4:57.72 for Timpview, and Annie Nuttall finished the 300-meter hurdles in 42.91 to claim another gold medal.
