PROVO — Timpanogos girl's 4x400-relay team may have been the happiest third-place finishers at the entire state meet Saturday.

The Timberwolves' top-three finish from Bethany Richard, Livia Meeds, Mattie Johnston and Gracie Meeds in 3 minutes, 59.11 seconds clinched a 4A team title at BYU's Robison Track Complex.

The move helped Timpanogos, which finished behind Park City (3:57.40) and Bear River (3:57.89), hold off Snow Canyon for the Timberwolves' second championship in four years.

"As soon as the 200 meters finished, we added up the points and saw it was so close that we had the same situation as if we were tied," said Aldana Navarrete-Lamas, one of three seniors on the 4x400 squad. "So we all thought as long as we try to win every one of our legs, we could finish in front and win the title. We just needed to beat Snow Canyon, do our best, and we executed."

Navarrete-Lamas was one of three seniors on the 4x400 squad, along with junior Brooklyn Sturdivant, who also finished third in the 400. That senior group helped win a state title as freshmen — and will graduate with another.

"Honestly, it means the entire world," Navarrete-Lamas said. "I'm just glad that we get to go out this year strong."

In the boy's race, Snow Canyon had already wrapped up its third straight team title by the time Trevor Gough anchored the 4x400-meter relay team in the meet finale.

But Gough and teammates Matthew Maclennan, Semaj Thompson and Benjamin Judd still had work to do: upend a 33-year record.

The Warriors finished their state title victory lap in 3:18.50, snapping a 4A record that had stood since 1991 when Viewmont won the classification's title in 3:18.65.

Gough cruised over the finish line and broke the tape with his stylistic blue hair and a wide smile on his face. He knew exactly what he and his team had just done.

"We were just having fun, getting ready. It was a blast," said Gough, who said his relay team beat their usual time by close to four seconds. "We already had our own school record, and we just wanted to go hard. That's what we did from the start. We were cruising."
