KAYSVILLE — A former high school secretary has pleaded guilty to making "multiple unauthorized purchases using Davis High School funds, totaling over $80,000."
Between July 21, 2020, and Feb. 9, 2021, Kellie Heather Wilko had access to two different school credit cards to make authorized purchases, according to court documents.
A $1,600 PayPal charge in April 2021 caught the attention of a Davis County school auditor, who started searching through the transaction histories of both cards, the plea statement said.
Additional suspicious transactions were then discovered, including one from Home Depot totaling almost $2,700. When Wilko was questioned by police, she "admitted that the Home Depot charge was for new flooring in her home," and also "admitted to making additional unauthorized purchases totaling $41,053.40. Accordingly, (she) admitted to making a total of $82,045.02 of unauthorized purchases," charging documents allege.
Wilko pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of attempted misuse of public money, a third-degree felony, as part of a plea deal. She was originally charged with a second-degree felony. Court documents indicate that no restitution is required as Wilko "has repaid all of said funds, and did so well before charges were filed in this case."
