IVINS, Washington County — Police identified the man who was hit and killed by a car on a Washington County highway last week after his own vehicle rolled several times.
The man was identified Tuesday as Robert Willis Anderson, 35, of St. George.
Washington County sheriff's deputies responded to a rollover accident on Old Highway 91 near Bulldog Pass Road, about 20 miles southwest of Ivins, about 10 p.m. on Jan. 31.
Multiple witnesses pulled over to check on Anderson before officers arrived and reported him as disorderly, according to St. George News. They said he was attempting to enter their vehicles and "demanding to be taken to Las Vegas, Nevada," the news outlet reported Tuesday.
When deputies arrived on the scene, Anderson was "acting out of sorts," ran into the roadway and kneeled down in the southbound lane, Sgt. Lucas Alfred told KSL.com last week. A second vehicle heading south to Mesquite hit the man in the roadway and he died on scene.
The driver of the second vehicle stopped down the road and called emergency dispatchers to report he hit something but didn't know what it was because it was dark out, Alfred said. The man and woman in the vehicle cooperated with the police as accident reconstruction teams investigated.
Alfred emergency crews were on the scene until 5 a.m. Thursday. He said the cause of the initial rollover and details of the accident were still being determined.
St. George News reported that Anderson was arrested and charged in 2022 with aggravated child abuse. He later pleaded "no contest" to the charge and was sentenced in May 2023 to serve 60 days in jail, which was to be followed by 24 months probation, the outlet reported.
