CORTEZ, Colorado — A Utah man has been named by police as the gunman who fatally shot a Colorado police officer before being killed in a shootout with other officers earlier this week.

Jason Campbell, 44, of Ogden, is believed to have shot and killed Cortez Police Sgt. Michael Moran during a traffic stop on Wednesday in the 800 block of U.S. Highway 160/491.

After Moran was shot, Campbell and a passenger drove away but were located a short time later in the 7500 block of Highway 160/491, according to Cortez police.

"Additional shots were exchanged between the suspects and officers at the second location. One suspect died on scene and the other was taken into custody," police stated.

On Saturday, police stated that the second suspect, the passenger in Campbell's vehicle, was questioned and later released.

Police say the investigation into the fatal shooting is ongoing to determine an exact timeline of events. Flags in Cortez were lowered to half-staff to honor the fallen officer.
