PROVO — Police have arrested a man accused of leaving the scene after hitting and killing a man who was found in the road Friday morning.
The victim was identified as Brian Keith Coltharp, 43, Provo police spokeswoman Janna-Lee Holland said Friday afternoon. She identified the driver of the car that allegedly hit him as Jose Sandoval.
The collision occurred near 500 West and Center Street, and the intersection was closed to traffic for a time due to the investigation. Holland said police received a call about a person lying in the middle of the road about 4:30 a.m.
Investigators determined it was likely a traffic accident. After reviewing footage of the intersection, they saw a car hit the man after he had fallen into the road. Police said the driver may have been unaware they hit someone and possibly thought it was an animal.
"They appeared to stop for a moment, keep going, so it's not sure at this time what the driver was thinking, whether they knew they hit a person, or thought it was just an object and continued on their way," Holland told KSL-TV prior to the arrest of Sandoval.
Correction: Provo police initially said the victim was age 45, not 43.
