SALT LAKE CITY — A West Valley City man has been sentenced to prison after he pleaded guilty to firing shots at officers during a traffic stop.
Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said the rapid resolution of the case, less than six months after the charges were filed, reassures the community that "public safety remains paramount."
On April 20, Angel Bernardino, 18, fled from a West Valley City police officer who initiated a traffic stop after suspecting that the driver was under the influence. Bernardino crashed his vehicle when attempting to turn, and then pulled out a handgun and fired at the officer, narrowly missing her, according to a statement from the district attorney.
The officer, Silicia Campa, fired back at Bernardino and hit him before taking cover until backup arrived, according to police.
"This case serves as a testament to the dedication and bravery of our law enforcement officers. Officer Campa's swift response to a life-threatening situation not only saved her own life but protected the community," Gill said.
On Oct. 4, Bernardino pleaded guilty to felony assault on a peace officer with a dangerous weapon and use of a firearm as a restricted person, both second-degree felonies. He was sentenced to serve between one and 15 years in prison for each charge, with the sentences running consecutively.
Body camera video of the incident, which occurred near 2400 S. Redwood Road, shows the officer yelling "Police! Stop! Stop! Stop!" It then shows the driver immediately taking out a gun and pointing it at the officer.
The video shows Campa firing three shots, and Bernardino falling to the ground.
After a brief pause, it shows Bernardino reaching for his gun which is on the ground and then the officer fires two more shots.
Campa continues yelling commands at Bernardino until other officers arrive.
