WEST VALLEY CITY — Two people, including a man who police originally called a person of interest, have been arrested in connection with a West Valley shooting death.
Esteban Roberto Galvez, 18, who is accused of shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of murder, obstruction of justice, aggravated assault and six counts of illegal discharge of a firearm. Kimberly Samantha Reyon Munoz was also arrested Tuesday for investigation of obstruction of justice.
On Sept. 15, Brian Torres Hernandez, 21, was shot and killed near 2800 W. 2700 South following a verbal argument with another man. Officers found Hernandez "lying on the driveway between two vehicles. Brian had multiple visible gunshot wounds to his torso," a police booking affidavit states. A total of 13 shell casings were found nearby.
Witnesses told detectives Galvez was seen running across the road and "shooting Brian until Brian fell to the ground," according to the affidavit. He also pointed his gun at a woman with whom he previously had been in a relationship with, but did not fire, police say.
"Esteban told witnesses that he went back to get more ammunition to kill his ex-girlfriend, but her family came out the front door, so he left. There are recorded conversations where Esteban directly threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend and her family, specifically by shooting them with a gun. Esteban has shown no remorse and instead told witnesses it felt good to kill Brian and that he has more unfinished business to take care of. This murder was done with malice and with a cold heart," officers wrote in the affidavit
After the shooting, Munoz drove Galvez to Pleasant Grove. Police say Galvez told Munoz he had just shot and killed a man.
"Kimberly was present with the murder suspect and another person while the murder suspect discussed intimate information about the homicide. Kimberly's vehicle was observed on surveillance footage with the murder suspect a few hours after the homicide," the arrest report states. "The homicide suspect told her he shot and killed his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend. When Kimberly arrived in Pleasant Grove, the homicide suspect went into detail about the homicide and that they were going to flee the country."
Investigators say Munoz remained in constant contact with Galvez up until her arrest.
"Kimberly said she wanted to help the homicide suspect because she was afraid for the suspect because of the consequences they faced," according to the affidavit.
Galvez was located by West Valley police Tuesday night and pulled over near 4100 S. Redwood. He was taken into custody without incident.
Galvez was previously arrested on Aug. 4 at the same address of the shooting in connection with a domestic violence incident. In that case, he punched his girlfriend in the leg twice while accusing her of cheating, a police booking affidavit states. He was charged in West Valley Justice Court on Aug. 8 with misdemeanor assault.
