WEST JORDAN — A man was arrested Tuesday after police say he randomly shot a gun out his window while driving around, hitting one house and nearly injuring the people inside.

Oswaldo Guadalupe Gutierrez-Jimenez, 22, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of two counts of illegally shooting a a gun, two counts of shooting a gun from a vehicle, carrying a weapon while under the influence of alcohol, disorderly conduct and two counts of aggravated assault.

The investigation began Monday night when police responded to a report of shots fired near 3100 West and 6800 South. Two residents of a home told police they were standing in their kitchen when they heard "multiple loud bangs," according to a police booking affidavit.

"The victims, who were standing just inches from the impact, saw pieces of their wall flying by them and noticed a hole in the wall. Officers were able to recover a slug in the residence, which was located by following the trajectory of the hole in the wall," the affidavit states.

A second gunshot was also found on the brick exterior of the home. Witnesses saw a red pickup truck speeding away from the home. Surveillance video was also collected from a doorbell camera.

West Jordan police put out a notice to other agencies to be on the lookout for the pickup. A short time later, a Taylorsville police officer saw the pickup drive by and Gutierrez-Jimenez "fire a pistol into the air multiple times," the affidavit says.

Gutierrez-Jimenez was pulled over. His blood-alcohol level was measured at 0.135%, or about two and a half times the legal limit, according to the arrest report. Through their investigation, detectives believe that he shot at the West Jordan home at random while driving.
