SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake police are investigating a shooting that killed an 18-year-old man Sunday in Sugar House.
About 1:34 a.m., police received several 911 calls reporting a shooting outside Walgreens, 909 E. 2100 South. When officers arrived, they located a man on the ground and began life-saving efforts. Paramedics transported the man to a hospital in "extremely critical condition," Salt Lake police said in a statement.
The man, identified by police as J'kye Lovell Ray Watkins, died later Sunday afternoon. Watkins's death marks the 13th homicide in Salt Lake City this year.
A fight occurred just before the shooting and detectives were working to determine how it was connected to the shooting death.
Several blocks surrounding the scene were closed as officers searched for the gunman. Witnesses later told police those responsible for the shooting had left the scene in a car.
No arrests have been made.
"Detectives believe several people witnessed the shooting and left before police arrived. Those people likely have critical information to the timeline of the shooting and are asked to come forward," the statement says. The number to call is 801-799-3000.
