PROVO — Provo city officials swore in the interim fire chief as the official new fire chief on Tuesday.
Provo Fire Chief Jeremy Headman served as the city's deputy fire chief for six years and has been the interim chief since former Chief James Miguel retired in May. Headman was sworn in with a unanimous vote from the City Council.
"The rewards of being a firefighter are unmatched. It's not so much about what firefighters do daily, but what they're willing to do for someone experiencing their worst day," Headman said in a press release. "Provo has the most caring, service-oriented first responders a community could want."
Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi said firefighting is in Headman's blood, as he followed in the footsteps of his dad and brother. She said he has been a commendable firefighter with a lot of experience.
"His multifaceted roles ranging from paramedic, engineer, station captain, to battalion chief have equipped him with insights. But what truly warms my heart is Jeremy's genuine connection with his team," Kaufusi said. "Chief Headman has earned the admiration of the 81 full-time firefighters because he has taken time to know each one personally."
His 28 years as a firefighter is impressive, Kaufusi said, but she most values him as "someone who truly cares." She said he has a forward-looking vision and is dedicated to public safety infrastructure.
Kaufusi said the city is "rejuvenating" Fire Station 21 as part of her commitment to safety, and the station will be unveiled in Fall 2024.
"I have a great love for Provo city and Provo Fire Department. With the support of Mayor Kaufusi and the Provo City Council, we have the best facilities, equipment and services to care for our personnel so they can best care for our citizens," Headman said.
