SALT LAKE CITY — Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash in Salt Lake City that they believe may have been intentional.

The investigation began at 1:15 a.m. Monday when dispatch received a call about a crash involving a car and a person riding a scooter near 1020 West and 1000 North.

Detectives believe the car was westbound on 1000 North when it turned around, crossed traffic and hit a 61-year-old man on a scooter who was also westbound, according to police.

"Based on the preliminary information, detectives believe the driver may have intentionally hit the man on the scooter and left the scene without stopping," police said in a news release.

Officers and paramedics tried to save the man's life, but he died on the scene. His name has not been released.

Investigators don't know if the man on the scooter and the driver of the car knew each other. Police don't have a description of the car. They are asking neighbors to check doorbell cameras for video that may help in the investigation.
