PROVO — Two days ago, before his semifinal heat in the 100-meter dash at the 5A state track and field meet, Murray senior Amari Adams made a subtle change in his starting blocks aimed at giving him more power with a better push from the start.

The move immediately dropped his time from a 10.7 to a 10.5 — and now led him to a state championship.

Adams leaned into a 10.53 in the 100-meter dash to hold off East multisport athlete and BYU football commit Kevin Doe for the individual title Saturday at BYU's Clarence Robison Track.

"My coaches helped me out a lot today, to stay focused the entire time," added Adams, who has committed to Weber State in the 100 and 200, "and try to figure out what I can do."

Adams added the sprinters' double in the afternoon, edging Doe again with a winning time of 21.21 in the 200 to help the Spartans to a top-10 team finish.

Kellis Taylor's 400-meter win in 47.66 helped Mountain View to its first boys track and field title since 2006.

Jane Hedengren won individual 1,600- and 800-meter titles to lead Timpview's girls to their first championship in school history.
