SALT LAKE CITY — Not even back-to-back bogeys could take the shine off what Ellie DeMond did in the final golf tournament of her senior year.
DeMond shot 2-under-par 70 to finish with a two-day total of 2-under 142 and cruise to the 3A girls golf state championship on Thursday at Glendale Golf Course, where she also helped the Trojans clinch their first team title in program history.
Jailee Snow added a runner-up finish for Morgan, which ended Richfield's five-year run of four state titles with a 12-stroke victory for a senior class that has finished second to the Wildcats each of the past three tournaments.
"I think going into the tournament, we all were just knew we needed to relax and play our game," said DeMond, who has committed to play golf at Westminster. "We all just focused on playing for the team instead of playing for ourselves, and that helped make it less stressful on ourselves, focusing on the next shot and not the end result."
After winning the Utah Section PGA spring title as a freshman during the COVID-19 pandemic, DeMond had to wait a long time for Thursday's championship. But the final few holes of her team and individual title quickly turned into a victory lap.
DeMond shot even-par 72 to lead the field after 18 holes, and started Thursday's final round even stronger. The senior birdied two of her first three holes, and finished with four birdies and an eagle on the front nine, never feeling threatened after hitting a 4-iron hybrid approach shot and draining the ensuing 10-foot putt for eagle on the par-5 ninth hole to finish 4-under through nine.
"I was just really relaxed, and focus don the next shot," DeMond said. "I've focused on that the whole season, and it's really helped me not be so stressed.
"Last year at state, I had an anxiety attack, and I've worked on that all year until now," she added. "I think I've been doing pretty good this year. On the front, I just focused on getting par — but pars were birdies for me today, it felt like."
The Trojans snapped Richfield's run with their first in program history, halting a dominant run that ranked the Wildcats as the second-winningest program since the UHSAA sanctioned girls golf in 2008. Only 4A Desert Hills has more titles in that span with a nine-year run that spanned 2010-18.
What a way for the senior group to go out, head coach Dennis Peterson said, taking a seven-stroke edge from the first 18 holes and stretching it as high as 14 before finishing with the 12-stroke margin.
"We just had an amazing season with these seniors. The girls worked and worked, and then they got to these two days where they've been here before and been on the wrong end," Peterson said. "But the senior leadership took over; they showed experience. All these girls, they play a lot of junior golf and they've been a fun group to coach."
