Woman shot by officers after she pointed gun at them, Syracuse police say

SYRACUSE — A woman was hospitalized after she pointed a gun at officers, who then shot and injured her Tuesday night, police said.

Syracuse police responded to a call about 10 p.m. from the woman's adult son. The man said his estranged mother was sending "threatening text messages and was making suicidal and homicidal comments," according to a statement from Syracuse police.

When officers arrived at the home near 1900 West and 2350 South in Syracuse, they said the woman was inside a vehicle in front of the house.

"They quickly determined that she was holding a handgun. When confronted, she took a suicidal posture with the weapon," the statement says.

Police said they tried to convince the woman to surrender for several minutes.

"Early details indicate that at some point, she moved the weapon in an aggressive manner and pointed it at the officers. The officers perceived a threat to their safety and fired their weapons. The woman was struck by some of the rounds and was later transported to a local hospital," Syracuse police said.

Police said the woman never fired at officers. The statement does not indicate how many shots were fired by officers or where she was hit.

The statement says Syracuse police officers, Clinton police officers and Davis County sheriff's deputies were involved in the shooting. The Davis County Officer-Involved Critical Incident Protocol Team is investigating the shooting.

The woman's name has not yet been released.
