SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake Community College announced a new partnership with SkyWest Airlines to create an "elite access" aviation maintenance and technician career path for students.

The SkyWest Aviation Maintenance Technician Pathway gives aspiring technicians a jump-start on their training as commercial aviation Airframe and Powerplant maintenance technicians. This pathway will build upon SLCC's current aviation maintenance program.

SLCC students in the aviation maintenance pathway will qualify for elite access to SkyWest benefits, including mentoring from experienced mechanics, enhanced company seniority, up to $4,500 in education assistance, test fee reimbursements and a final job interview after graduation, a SLCC news release said. Eligible students could receive up to $7,600 in tuition reimbursements from SkyWest.

"This partnership gives our students the opportunity to get their foot in the door in a competitive market. While this helps SkyWest secure future employees, it also helps our students financially," said Todd Baird, professor of aviation maintenance. "It's a win-win for everyone."

The partnership aims to engage students early, allowing them to focus on their education and gain hands-on experience through mentorship from SkyWest, the news release said.
