SALT LAKE CITY — Police say a man has been arrested after crashing a stolen SUV into a traffic pole, and then running from officers Monday morning.
An officer was patrolling near 1000 W. North Temple when he noticed a suspicious SUV surrounded by people in a parking lot of a local business, Salt Lake City police said in a news release.
The people left the area when they saw the officer, and the driver of the SUV quickly drove away, police said.
The officer searched the area and found the SUV, which had crashed into a traffic light, causing the driver-side airbag to be deployed. The driver fled the scene, but a witness who saw the crash directed officers to his location where he was "quickly and safely arrested," according to the news release.
Police identified the driver as Johnny Quintana, 26, and he was taken to a local hospital for treatment of some minor injuries he sustained during the crash.
During the investigation, officers said they learned Quintana had stolen the SUV from another city overnight and he had a suspended driver license.
Quintana was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of felony receiving stolen property, hit and run, driving on a suspended license and improper lane travel.
