PROVO – Police Chief Fred Ross resigned Sunday citing his "fit" in the department as chief "has been determined to not be sustainable."

He said after discussions with his family he decided it is in his best interest, personally and professionally, to resign. Ross was named chief of police on Nov. 30, 2021, after former chief Rich Ferguson retired in March last year.

Mayor Michelle Kaufusi appointed Cpt. Troy Beebe as acting Provo police chief starting Monday.

"In accepting Chief Ross' resignation, it became important to unify the department quickly," Kaufusi said. "Captain Beebe has deep roots to our community, as well as invested time within this department. We appreciate his willingness to bring his skills and knowledge as we seek a smooth transition."

Beebe has served in the Provo Police Department for 24 years. He said it is the community he grew up in and where he has chosen to serve professionally.

"We will move forward doing what we do best: community policing and crime prevention," Beebe said. "Provo attracts officers of the highest caliber — all invested in the Provo way, which is professional policing with compassion."

Beebe said this high standard of policing will remain unchanged as the department moves forward.
