SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City police have arrested the alleged gunman who shot a man in a motel parking lot on State Street, leaving the victim in life-threatening condition.

Joseph Marquez, 60, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of attempted murder, obstructing justice and a possession of a gun by a restricted person. Officers found Marquez Wednesday afternoon hiding in Thomas Leory Glasker's apartment, according to police. Glasker, 71, was arrested Tuesday afternoon and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of attempted murder and obstructing justice.

According to a police booking affidavit, Marquez got into an argument with a 38-year-old man and his girlfriend, allegedly over a cigarette, at the Wasatch Inn, 1416 S. State, on Tuesday.

"The victim and his girlfriend walked away from the altercation and went into another room. A short time later, (Marquez) went to the room where the victim was located and started to pound on the door wanting to confront the victim again. The victim and his girlfriend then exited the room and the verbal altercation continued," the affidavit states. "During this altercation, an eyewitness told police that they observed (Marquez) shoot the victim in the head with a gun."

Glasker is accused of handing Marquez the gun he allegedly used to shoot the victim, according to police. Glasker then drove Marquez away from the scene, according to police.

"The victim in this case is currently at Intermountain Medical Center on life support and is not expected to survive the gunshot wound to the head," police stated in their affidavit.

The victim's name has not been released pending notification of family members. Salt Lake police on Wednesday stated that members of the department's homicide squad and Liberty Bike Patrol unit assisted in arresting Marquez.
