MUSHROOM LAND — It's time to dig through your closet and find those old audiovisual cords and gingerly blow into the video game cartridge, because your 8-bit childhood is coming at you fast with "The Super Mario Bros. Movie."
No, no. Everyone, calm down. I'm not talking about that 1993 train wreck that scarred an entire generation. There is an all-new animated movie from Universal, about our favorite plumber — well, my favorite plumber at least. I still haven't found one I trust. I'm open to some referrals.
The new iteration of the film includes the voice talents of Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. The movie has been in production for some time, and when Pratt was announced there were some skeptics wondering if the superstar could be the Mario. After all that time, we finally get to hear Pratt as Mario.
Well, kind of.

The first trailer for the film was released Thursday afternoon, and it shows off some fun visuals and the promise of action and oddball humor. Do we get to hear Pratt, though? We do, but not very well. We get just a line or two from him, and guess what? He sounds like Chris Pratt.
At one moment, you can pick out a slight New York accent, but at the end of the day, it sounds like Emmet from "The Lego Movie," Barley from "Onward" and Starlord from "Guardians of the Galaxy." And I'm OK with it. I like Pratt and think he, along with the rest of the cast, can make the movie fun.
The trailer doesn't give us a lot of information. Still, by the looks of it, Bowser is bent on taking over all the different worlds and Mario accidentally ends up in this universe and turns into an unlikely hero with a plunger. Familiar story.
"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is due in theaters on April 7, 2023.
