SOUTH SALT LAKE — South Salt Lake police officers exchanged shots with an armed man early Tuesday, resulting in the gunman being killed and an officer injured.

The gunman was identified Wednesday as 44-year-old Jebb Muir.

Police say the "violent encounter" began late Monday, just before midnight, when officers responded to a report of a man with a gun of near 400 East and Robert Avenue (2500 South). Two officers approached the scene and "an exchange of gunfire occurred," South Salt Lake police spokeswoman Danielle Croyle said. One officer was taken to the hospital with an undisclosed injury.

"He is in stable and good condition," Croyle said. The other officer was not injured.

Muir died at the scene.

Investigators spent several hours processing the scene for evidence Tuesday and an independent investigation is underway.

"There is no outstanding threat to the community," Croyle said.

Robert Avenue is closed to traffic during the investigation and motorists were asked to avoid the area.
