MIDVALE — A 16-year-old boy was killed in Midvale on Thursday in what investigators believe was a gang-related shooting.

Unified police responded to a call of shots fired near 650 W. Wasatch Street about 9:15 p.m. Officers stationed at the department's Midvale precinct heard the shots and responded to the area immediately, said Unified Police Sgt. Melody Cutler. They were flagged down by a group who told the officers that a teen had been shot outside a residence.

The boy, who is from Midvale, was taken to a local hospital in "very critical condition," and later died from his injuries. His name has not yet been released pending notification of family members.

Police with K-9s along with officers from several nearby agencies assisted in searching for the gunman with no luck. Cutler said the incident is believed to be gang-related.

"These situations are always upsetting, whether it's close to the precinct or away from the precinct," said Unified police detectives Arlan Bennett. "We like to feel like our cities are safe. So anytime a situation like this happens, they are alarming to everybody, including us."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at 801-743-7000.
