COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — The ramp bridge that connects Union Park Avenue to westbound Interstate 215 will closed for two weeks so that construction crews can make several improvements to the ramp before it reopens at the end of the month, state transportation officials said on Monday.
The ramp bridge is set to close just before midnight on Tuesday night, according to the Utah Department of Transportation. Once it is closed, crews will begin replacing "key" bridge supports and barrier walls. The team will also lay down a thin layer of pavement across the bridge's driving surface so moisture won't seep into the concrete in the future, agency officials said.
"This maintenance work will keep the bridge in good condition for several more years," UDOT officials said in a news release Monday.
Throughout the closure, drivers planning to get onto westbound I-215 will be detoured to eastbound I-215, where they can exit and then turn around to get onto westbound I-215. The project is scheduled to be completed by July 28.
Southern Utah road construction
That's not the only new roadwork set to begin or underway in the state. Zion National Park officials said Monday that they are extending its Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway closure between Canyon Junction and the Zion National Park East Entrance by one day.
The highway will be closed from 10 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. on Tuesday, and then again from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning as construction crews work on the highway by the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel. The park has reported rockslides in the area a few times over the past few months.
"This proactive construction will keep the road smooth and prevent the need for unplanned closures in the future," park officials said in a statement. "It involves removing deteriorated asphalt, patching road foundations and installing new asphalt."
Visitors who plan on camping at either the Watchman or South campgrounds can still enter through the park's south entrance by Springdale during the closure, but they will not be able to drive through the park. Anyone who planned on using driving through on Monday or Tuesday nights will have to use other routes, such as state Routes 14, 20 and 59, or U.S. 89, park officials said.
