THE CINEPLEX — We are into May and that means one thing — no, not just that it's warming up and school will soon be out. It means the summer movie season is upon us.

Summer has been one of my favorite seasons since I was a kid because I always looked forward to summer blockbusters. My dad use to subscribe to the magazine "Entertainment Weekly." I loved going through those issues each week, but my favorite one each year was their summer movie preview.

I read over each title and get excited about what was coming up and looked forward to certain titles each month. Now I'm an adult and have the internet with all my favorite movie sites, and I am compiling the summer releases for all of you.

You're probably not the movie nerd I was as a child — which is a good thing — and don't get quite as excited about this, but that's OK. Undoubtedly, there is a movie or two on this list you'll be looking forward to catching on the big screen this summer.

Here is a look at the summer movie lineup for 2022.

May

'Downton Abbey: A New Era' (PG) — May 20

"Downton Abbey" isn't everyone's cup of tea — no, that wasn't a mistake — but those who like this particular brand of hot drink will be ecstatic about another "Downton" movie.

The second feature film from the popular television show finds the Crawley family and Downton staff as they receive a visit from the king and queen of Great Britain.

'The Bob's Burgers Movie' (PG-13) — May 27

Another TV show-turned-movie is headed to theaters this May, and that's the big screen version of the animated TV series "Bob's Burgers." The quirky show has a cult following, and fans love the struggling Belcher family and their small burger shop.

The movie will follow the odd family as they try to save the restaurant from closing as a sinkhole forms in front of it.

'Top Gun: Maverick' (PG-13) — May 27

Do I even need to go into this one? The '80s classic "Top Gun" is finally getting a sequel; and after multiple delays, it's finally flying into theaters.

Pete Mitchell, aka Maverick, is now a test pilot doing everything he can to avoid rank advancement so he doesn't get grounded. His next stop is as an instructor at the Top Gun school, where he was top of his class 30 years ago.

June

'Jurassic World: Dominion' (PG-13) — June 10

The third and presumably final installment of the "Jurassic World" franchise is charging into theaters in June. This time around, some familiar faces will be joining Owen and Claire on their adventure, as humans are having to learn how to live among the dinosaurs.

'Lightyear' (PG) — June 17

Disney and Pixar have a new film for you this summer, but it's not quite original, not quite a sequel. "Lightyear" is about Buzz Lightyear, but not the one we're quite familiar with. No longer a toy, he's now a space-traveling hero and we get to see how he became the defender of the galaxy.

'Elvis' (PG-13) — June 24

The king of rock and roll is getting his own biopic thanks to director Baz Luhrmann. The movie, opening in theatres this summer, will take a look at the musician's tumultuous life from an only-child Southern boy to a legendary rock star.

July

'Minions: The Rise of Gru' (PG) — July 1

I hope you're ready for more minion madness because the little, yellow henchmen are back in a film that is a prequel to the "Despicable Me" movies and a sequel to "Minions."

This time around, we get to see 12-year-old Gru as he dreams of being the world's greatest villain.

'Thor: Love and Thunder' (not yet rated) — July 8

Phase Four of the Marvel universe is well underway and next up is "Thor: Love and Thunder." This time Thor isn't just trying to save the universe, but he's also dealing with a lot of emotions and feelings as his ex-girlfriend, Jane Foster, shows up back in his life with a totally new look.

'Nope' (not yet rated) — July 22

Many of us got to know Jordan Peele through his hilarious comedy. But we were introduced to a totally different side of him when he wrote and directed "Get Out," and then again with "Us." The Oscar winner's latest movie, "Nope," promises to be just as tense, mind-bending and original as his other efforts.

Little about the plot of "Nope" is known at this point, but the trailer seems to promise plenty of scares.

'Bullet Train' (not yet rated) — July 29

If you're hoping for a quirky action movie with stylized and choreographed fight scenes, lots of colorful characters, and a healthy side of humor, then "Bullet Train" may be the ticket you're looking for.

Starring Brad Pitt, the movie follows five assassins aboard a fast-moving bullet train as they find out their missions have something in common.

'DC League of Super-Pets' (PG) — July 29

We can't go long without another superhero movie; and since there are so many, it just makes sense we are now getting a movie about the pets of superheroes.

In this animated feature, Krypto, Superman's super dog, must use his powers and some unlikely friends to save his best bud, the Man of Steel.

August

'Secret Headquarters' (not yet rated) — Aug. 5

What happens when a young boy and his buddies find a secret lair of what appears to be a superhero under his house? Well, we're about to find out with "Secret Headquarters."

The film stars Owen Wilson and Michael Pena and follows a young boy as he tries to make sense of this secret headquarters and how it connects to his estranged father.

'Samaritan' (not yet rated) — Aug. 26

Don't get tired of superheroes just yet. "Samaritan" is another movie based in a superhero world that has no connection to Marvel or DC. This movie stars Sylvester Stallone and tells the story of a teenager who finds out the world's greatest superhero may not have died in an epic battle 20 years earlier but instead is living life as a regular person.

There are some other films slated for this summer from big studios like Warner Bros. and Disney, but those have yet to be officially announced.

What movies are you most looking forward to this summer? Let us know in the comments.
