PROVO — Provo police say someone tried to steal money out of an ATM Thursday but didn't get very far.

At about 4:30 a.m., a citizen called police to report someone was trying to take or break into an ATM at Capital Community Bank, 3280 N. University Ave. Provo Police Sgt. Nisha King said the citizen called authorities before the bank's alarm system alerted police, so officers were on scene very quickly.

When police arrived at the bank, they found a vehicle with a chain attached to it, and the other end of the chain still wrapped around the ATM, King said. The vehicle was still running, but the driver had abandoned it and ran off. The ATM was damaged, but no money was taken, she said.

Detectives were trying to locate the owner of the vehicle on Thursday and determine if that person had anything to do with the attempted theft. King said investigators were also going through surveillance video from the bank and other nearby businesses.

Anyone with information about the attempted theft, or who has cellphone or doorbell camera video of anything that might be related to the incident, can call Provo police at 801-852-6200 or email the detective working the case at rcampbell@provo.org.
