ROY – Fire crews rescued a woman who fell into a manhole on Friday afternoon near 1900 West and 6000 South in Roy.

The incident happened just after 2 p.m. when officials say that a woman stepped on top of a manhole cover just after getting off a bus, according to Stuart Hackworth, spokesman for the Roy Police Department.

"This area had some recent construction, and it is believed that the manhole cover might not have been on there securely," Hackworth said.

He explained that when the woman fell into the hole, the cover also fell in, breaking a water pipe and trapping the woman's leg as water from the pipe gushed out. Crews from Roy, Weber and Ogden fire departments were able to get the woman out, and public works crews were able to shut the water off, Hackworth said.

The woman was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
