PROVO — It may have been expected, but it didn't make Olympus' dominance in the boys 5A state swim meet any less impressive.
The Titans won eight of the 11 events on Saturday at BYU as it dominated the rest of the field, beating second-place Skyline by more than 100 points.
Olympus set new overall state records in all three relays over the weekend and placed 17 other swimmers in the top eight of the eight individual races. It was a pure dominance, headlined by the 1-2-3 finish in the 100 breaststroke. Jack Saber won the race with a time of 56.00 with teammates Bridger Sink and Alexander Turney finishing right behind, all of them out-touching Wasatch's Jayden Hicken, who set the state record during the prelims.
Saber also won the 50 freestyle to earn two state titles on Saturday. Senior Evan VanBrocklin, who won the 200 individual medley (1:49.79) and 100 butterfly (48.15), was Olympus' other double-event winner. VanBrocklin was named the swimmer of the meet for his performance after setting 5A records in both of his individual races.
While the Olympus boys were expected to roll to the state title, the Titan girls came in as a slight underdog to Skyline.
On the meet-opening race, Olympus out-touched the Eagles to win the medley relay setting the stage for what would end up as a repeat champion for the Titans.
Colleen MacWilliams won both the 200 and 500 freestyles to lead Olympus to the title. The Titans won all three relays on Saturday.
Less than a year after former Cottonwood swimmer Rhyan White became the first Utahn to make a USA Olympic team, her heir apparent may have been revealed.
Skyline freshman Jade Garstang won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke and was named the girl swimmer of the meet. Garstrang's backstroke time of 55.07 was the best time posted by a high school swimmer in Utah not named Rhyan White, whose state backstroke state record is 53.45.
Spanish Fork junior Maddy Parker won the 100 and 200 freestyle.
