FARMINGTON — A fatal crash has shut down a portion of the Legacy Parkway near Farmington as Utah Highway Patrol troopers investigate.

Just after 8 a.m. Tuesday, a Hyundai Elantra heading south on the highway went off the road to the left for an unknown reason, returned to the highway, then drove off the road again to the left, this time traveling through the median and into oncoming traffic, said UHP Sgt. Cameron Roden.

The Hyundai was sideways when it drove up onto the northbound lanes, and was struck by an oncoming pickup truck on the driver's side rear panel near Glover Lane, he said. The impact from the collision was so great that the 24-year-old driver of the Hyundai was ejected from the vehicle and killed, even though a seat belt was being worn, Roden said.

Three occupants in the pickup received minor injuries. Damage to the Hyundai was extensive, he said. Detectives were investigating whether excessive speed was a factor in the crash.

Both northbound and southbound lanes of the highway were expected to be closed in that area until about noon.
