ECHO – A 58-year-old Salt Lake County woman is dead after a rifle was discharged Monday morning in what Summit County law enforcement officials are calling a hunting accident.
The call for help came in at about 11 a.m. from nearby the scene of the accident, which was a mile south of I-80 about 10 miles northeast of Echo, according to Summit County Sheriff's Lt. Andrew Wright.
Wright said the family was hunting on the last day of the elk hunt when the shooting happened. The woman was riding a side-by-side ATV when the gun went off, hitting her in the mid-body area, he said.
Emergency workers did what they could to try and save the woman, but Wright said she died before she could be transported to a hospital.
"Based on what we're seeing and the information we have at this point, it appears that it was a hunting accident," Wright said.
While the incident is still under investigation, Wright said the family is cooperating.
The woman's name was not released Monday.
