OREM — The passenger of a vehicle that was hit by a truck while stopped in the emergency lane on I-15 in Orem early Sunday has died, Utah Highway Patrol confirmed.

The driver of the vehicle, 43-year-old Season Dow, died on impact. The 16-year-old passenger, identified by the family as Toby Dow, was transported by ground ambulance with serious life-threatening injuries. He died Monday after being on life support through the weekend, a family member said.

About 12:05 a.m. Sunday, the Kia passenger car the mother and son were in was stopped in the right emergency lane of southbound I-15 near the 800 North exit in Orem. A Toyota pickup truck was southbound when it drifted into the emergency lane and hit the stopped car, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The driver of the Toyota suffered no injuries and was later arrested for investigation of DUI, troopers said.

"This senseless drunk driver left two other children, ages 13 and 14, to navigate life without their mother and brother. We are all so devastated at losing them. Season Dow was an amazing mother and taught at Brookhaven Elementary. Toby Dow was the kindest, most loving 16-year-old boy you could ever meet," said Duane Crabtree, a member of the family.

A GoFundMe* account has been created by the family to help cover funeral and medical expenses. Any leftover funds will be used to take care of Season's two other children, the page said.

The page memorialized Season as "always very thoughtful of others" and "a great example of persistence." She taught special education in Florida and recently had become a 3rd-grade teacher at Brookhaven Elementary.
